Heart of the Dragon
BAKUNAWA INK a filipino owned and filipino ran tattoo shop in Scarborough was established and opened in 2024. The shop name is derived from a filipino folklore story; BAKUNAWA the great moon eating sea serpent dragon.

BAKUNAWA THE MOON EATING SEA SERPENT DRAGON
The story of Bakunawa is a folklore story in the filipino culture of a great sea serpent dragon who swallowed 6 of the 7 moons created by Bathala the creator god. Ancient filipinos used the story of Bathala to explain great natural disasters.
Bathala the creator god created 7 moons, one for each day of the week. Bakunawa the serpent dragon coveted the moons and wanted them for himself so one night came up from the depths of the ocean and swallowed one of the seven moons. Night after night Bakunawa swallowed up another moon until there was only one left. Bathala stopped Bakunawa before he could devour the last moon hence explaining why there is only one moon in the night sky.

There have been many iterations of the story of BAKUNAWA as it was passed down through word of mouth like many folklore stories, however like BAKUNAWA the dragon we here at BAKUNAWA INK strive for more and focus on moving through the deep waters of life while looking to the sky for guidance.
